Why a Page Earns an AI Overview Citation: Reading the Winning Section

What is an AI Overview citation?

An AI Overview citation is a link to one of your pages inside the AI-written answer Google shows above the results. The cited passage, not the whole page, is what earns it.

You can see which pages an AI Overview cites, but not what on those pages made them eligible. Copying the whole page does not help; the winning part is usually one heading or paragraph.

Why it matters

AI systems score passages, not whole pages: a well-optimised page with poorly structured sections can lose to a weaker page with a well-written, self-contained paragraph. The single biggest structural mistake is burying the answer after narrative setup, so lead every H2 with a self-contained answer.

Value and limits

  • Practical value: Shows which heading or paragraph on each cited page best matches the AI Overview text, so edits to your page can be specific.
  • Limitation: Matching is a similarity score, not a statement of Google's logic, and it only describes pages that already won. No two independent studies confirm that markup alone raises AI citations.
  • Effort and payoff: Medium effort. Payoff is concrete page-level edits instead of generic advice.
  • Evidence: Consensus · no data

How to test it with SERP01

Issue: You can see which pages are cited, but not what on those pages made them eligible. We crawl the cited pages and match the answer text to their sections.

  1. Run an AI Overview scan for your keyword list (see the previous guide).
  2. From the report, start an AIO Crawler run on the same report; SERP01 fetches the cited pages.
  3. Open the report to see, per cited URL, the page sections ranked by how closely they match the AI Overview text.
  4. Use the content sources heat map to compare which element types win (headings, paragraphs, lists, structured data) across domains.
  5. Compare the winning sections with the equivalent part of your own page.

Actionable items

  • Answer under the question - put a clear, self-contained answer directly under a question-style heading.
  • Keep facts in HTML - key facts belong in plain HTML text, not only in scripts or images.
  • Mark up where it applies - add relevant structured data where it genuinely applies.
  • Re-scan - check again after changes to see whether you start appearing.

How SERP01 addresses this

Beyond listing which domain was cited, the AIO Crawler goes one step further: it fetches the cited pages and shows which heading or paragraph earned the citation, with a heat map across all cited domains, so the next edit is specific.
