How to See Which AI Overviews Cite You, and Who Does Instead

What is AI Overview tracking?

AI Overview tracking checks, for a list of keywords, whether Google shows an AI Overview and which domains are cited in it, and at what position.

Google shows AI Overviews for more searches every month, and you do not know whether your pages are cited in them or which competitors are.

Why it matters

Traditional SEO tools do not track AI citation metrics, and competition is tighter in AI answers: typically only 2 to 7 domains are cited per response compared with 10 organic results. Seer Interactive data, reported by Search Engine Land, found brands cited in AI Overviews earn about 35% more organic clicks than uncited brands on the same queries, so knowing where you stand is worth the effort.

Value and limits

  • Practical value: Shows, per keyword, whether an AI Overview appears and which domains are cited at which positions, giving you a baseline before you change anything.
  • Limitation: It is a snapshot. AI answers vary from run to run, so judge the change across repeated scans rather than a single absolute score. Google's own AI Overviews reporting in Search Console shows appearances by page but has no click or query data.
  • Effort and payoff: Medium effort for a repeatable keyword set. Payoff depends on acting on the gaps it shows.
  • Evidence: Consensus · no data (the 35% figure is a confirmed two-source statistic; the tracking tactic itself has no controlled data yet)

How to test it with SERP01

Issue: Google shows AI Overviews for more searches every month, and ordinary rank tracking does not show whether your pages are cited. We scan a keyword list and record who owns the citations.

  1. Prepare a list of the keywords you care about (up to 500 per scan).
  2. Open the AI Overview Research tool, paste the list and choose location and device.
  3. Run the scan and open the report: it shows, per keyword, whether an AI Overview appeared and which domains were cited at which position.
  4. Use the domain heatmap to see which sites own the most citations across your list, and where you appear.
  5. Send the report to the AIO Crawler to see which part of each cited page earned the citation.

Actionable items

  • List the gaps - note the keywords where an AI Overview appears and you are not cited, and prioritise by volume and intent.
  • Compare with cited pages - see the guide on why a page earns an AI Overview citation.
  • Answer directly - add a concise answer near the top of the page, with supporting structured data where it fits.
  • Re-scan - repeat on a schedule to track movement.

How SERP01 addresses this

One scan covers a full keyword list and shows who owns the citations, with positions, as a heatmap. It also connects to the AIO Crawler, so you can go from who is cited to why they were cited without leaving the account.
