How to Map Topical Authority and Spot Pages to Merge

What is topical authority?
Topical authority is how completely and consistently a site covers a subject compared with its competitors. A topical map shows which topics a site covers, which pages belong to each topic and where coverage is thin or repeated.
Your site has dozens or hundreds of pages and no clear picture of which topics they actually cover, where coverage is thin, and where several pages repeat each other.
Why it matters
Multiple pages competing for the same query are a net loss, and consolidating overlapping topics is a core part of site architecture. The merge rule: when two or more pages target overlapping queries with split rankings, 301 the weaker URL to the stronger one and update all internal links to the canonical page.
Value and limits
- Practical value: Shows which topics you own, which competitors own, and which of your URLs overlap, so you can merge or re-aim pages instead of publishing more.
- Limitation: Intent is read from today's results page and can shift, and ranking data is an estimate. Similar keywords on pages with genuinely different intents are not cannibalization: differentiate those pages instead of merging.
- Effort and payoff: Medium effort up front, low to maintain. High payoff for sites with overlapping pages.

How to test it with SERP01
Issue: A site with dozens or hundreds of pages rarely has a clear picture of what it covers. We map topics for your domain and your competitors side by side.
- Create a project in Site Topical Mapper and add your domain plus the competitor domains you want to compare.
- Run the project. SERP01 collects ranking keywords, clusters them by topic, classifies search intent and builds a topic and subtopic tree.
- Open the tree to see which domain owns each topic, then look at the pages mapped to each topic.
- Note topics where several of your URLs appear (merge candidates) and topics where only competitors appear (gaps).
- Re-run later to see how coverage changes over time.
Actionable items
- Consolidate overlaps - merge overlapping pages into one stronger URL and redirect the rest.
- Fill the gaps - create pages for high-value topics where only competitors appear.
- Link into the hub - link new and merged pages into the topic's hub so authority concentrates.
How SERP01 addresses this
It combines clustering, intent classification and a topic hierarchy with a recommendation per URL (optimize or consolidate) and keeps history, so you can see change over time rather than a one-off snapshot.
