How to Find Keywords Your Competitors Rank for That You Do Not
By Jim Huang, SEO Digital Marketing Consultant and AI Enthusiast · Last updated · Effort: Low
What is a keyword gap?
A keyword gap is the list of keywords your competitors rank for that you do not, or rank much lower for. It turns guessing about what to write into a prioritised list.
You know competitors are getting traffic from searches you never show up for, but you cannot see which ones.
Why it matters
Keyword mapping assigns each keyword cluster to the single page best placed to satisfy its intent: existing pages are marked to optimize, and clusters with no page are marked as gaps to create. A keyword gap against competitors gives you the list of gaps and weak spots to feed that map.
Value and limits
- Practical value: Gives every cluster a clear job: optimize an existing page or create a new one, instead of guessing what to write next.
- Limitation: Keyword volumes from tools are estimates, and intent is read from today's results page and can shift. A high-volume gap keyword is only worth a page if its intent matches what you offer.
- Effort and payoff: Low effort to run the comparison, medium to act on. High payoff for new content and sites with overlapping pages.

How to test it with SERP01
Issue: Competitors are getting traffic from searches you never show up for, and you cannot see which ones without a comparison. We run the gap against two or three competitors and filter it for relevance.
- Open the Keyword Gap tool and enter your domain, then one to a few competitor domains. You can also compare subdomains, URL paths or exact URLs.
- Run the comparison and open the keywords where competitors rank and you do not (or rank much lower).
- Sort by volume and difficulty and remove keywords that do not fit your offer.
- Send the shortlist to Keyword Grouper so related keywords land on one page instead of becoming ten thin pages.
Actionable items
- Create or expand pages - build pages for the clusters you are missing, and improve existing pages for keywords where you rank 11-30.
- Start with buying intent - prioritise topics that match what you sell.
- Track it monthly - re-run the same list to see which gaps closed.
How SERP01 addresses this
You can scope the comparison to a subdomain, a folder or an exact page, so you can compare your blog against a competitor's blog or one product page against another, not just whole sites. The result feeds directly into clustering in the same account.
