How to Read a SERP: Who Ranks and Which Features Appear

What does it mean to read a SERP?
Reading a SERP means studying the search engine results page for a keyword before writing for it: which pages rank, in what format, and which features appear, such as featured snippets and AI Overviews.
You are about to write a page for a keyword but you have not looked closely at what already ranks, in what format, and what else is on the results page.
Why it matters
Google ranks pages on relevance, so a page built for the wrong intent struggles however well it is written. The pages already on page one have passed Google's relevance test: note their content type, format and angle, and match the dominant pattern. The subtopics they share and the People Also Ask questions show what else the searcher needs.
Value and limits
- Practical value: Prevents wasted content and gives every page a clear job by showing the intent Google rewards for a query.
- Limitation: Intent is read from today's results page and can shift, and results vary by location and device. Re-check intent when a page decays.
- Effort and payoff: Low effort per query. High payoff for new content and for pages written against the wrong format.

How to test it with SERP01
Issue: A page written without looking at what already ranks often matches the wrong intent. We check the live top 10 for the keyword, location and device first.
- Open the SERP Analysis tool and enter the keyword, location and device (mobile and desktop can differ).
- Run the analysis and read the top 10: domain types, page formats and titles.
- Note which result features appear (featured snippet, AI Overview, other blocks) and who holds them.
- Repeat for two or three related keywords and for your key locations.
Actionable items
- Match the format - follow the dominant page format and angle, then differentiate on depth, data or clarity.
- Answer directly - if a featured snippet or AI Overview is present, add a concise answer near the top of your page.
- Reconsider the target - if the top 10 is all large brands or one page type, consider a different keyword or format.
How SERP01 addresses this
It brings the live top 10, location and device settings and result features together in one report that is quick to run and quick to re-run, so checking a SERP before every brief becomes routine rather than a chore.
